NEWS:  Chris Ramey and Herban Insurgent Publishing, LLC are proud to announce the Sept. 10, 2010 release of "West Virginia Girls - Solo Melodic Clawhammer Banjo." This online collection includes five traditional fiddle tunes from the Library of Congress Henry Reed recordings and one original composition, all arranged for melodic clawhammer banjo and performed by Chris Ramey.

Available for download for $5 at the Chris Ramey Music Store.

In researching the origins of his arrangement of one of his favorite oldtime banjo tunes, "West Virginia Girls," Chris found an unexpected new friend in Miles Krassen, the author of "Clawhammer Banjo," 1974.  Turns out both Miles and Chris currently live in Boulder County and have since met and begun to work on fiddle and banjo tunes together. Miles' version of "West Virginia Girls" from his Clawhammer Banjo book was the seed for Chris' version, serving as his introduction to the tune about 20 years ago. Chris soon lost Miles' book, but continued to play "West Virginia Girls" for the next two decades, where it evolved into its own arrangement. With Miles' blessing, Chris claimed his own version of the song.
During the course of his research, Chris happened across the Library of Congress American Memory Collections and "Fiddle Tunes of the Old Frontier: The Henry Reed Collection." Reed was also cited by Miles Krassen as having played "West Virginia Girls," in his Clawhammer Banjo book. Chris began studying the Reed version of the tune, "West Virginia Gals" or "If You Want To Go A Courtin," with Alan Jabbour's field notations and composed his own banjo arrangement. This process was repeated for three more tunes, resulting in five original solo melodic clawhammer banjo arrangements of four traditional tunes: "West Virginia Girls," "Ducks In The Pond," "Rocky Mountain Goat," "West Virginia Gals (If You Want To Go A Courtin)", and "Cluck Old Hen." Chris also composed an original work for this release, entitled "Rocky Mountain Locust," after the infamous and now-extinct swarming insect of the American West.
The companion clawhammer banjo tablature book for all six of the "West Virginia Girls" arrangements is NOW AVAILABLE - HERE AT THE CHRIS RAMEY MUSIC STORE.
Chris played his Deering Goodtime openback banjo for all tunes on "West Virginia Girls."  All "West Virginia Girls" songs are available for licensing through Herban Insurgent Publishing, LLC.

Elderberry Wine

Chorus:
Never forget the first time
Never forget the first time
I drank elderberry wine
Elderberry wine for the last time

Sailing through the woods
A snowy night
Frozen breath
A sea of white
Ancient ship moored in the moonlight
Ancient ship moored in the moonlight

Two silver eyes
Shining bright
Sliver of time
Caught in my headlight
Please let him run, run away
Please let him run, run away

Music loves good company
Like a breath, it's only temporary
Like a breath
Between life and death is a line
So thin

Such a rush
Middle of nowhere
Is such a rush

Barely made it to
The gig on time
Help ya load in
And everything is fine

Couldn't see the mountain
For the climb
So high

Church's key was stolen from us
Brutal system gave no justice
No justice

How can we forgive or forget?
No way

Chorus

Whatever can anyone say
To change anyone else's mind
When anyone can see anything
Then anyone else is blind
What good is a could've when
There's only been and was and then
We're never what we used to be
Even when we know just where we've been

Strangers can know everything
There's to know about the other
And old friends can fall on a different path
And forget about the other
I don't question your answers
I got the map to the place you're going
You haven't answered my question though
Cause your mind's too busy blowin

Chorus:
Got to drink the water you know that you do
Got to learn your lessons and let 'em run through
Life is not all what you think I thought you'd see too
But I watch you wanderin all around and fadin
From my view

No one ever said that you would get your share
So don't act like a victim cause life just doesn't care
Quick turn away and I wonder what makes it why
A soul that matches mine could just give up give up
Drift away and die

Chorus

Life is so unbelievable
Ancient spirits paint your face
Electric eyes
Powersoak me
Sending my soul to outer space

But Earth is close
The heat of your body
Gravity I can't outrun
My mind soars back
To primal memory
Days of rain and blinding sun

Feel the pulse of our union
Will never divide
Melt as one
Drifting further into our love
Deeper we fall
Deeper we fall

Unlike the pain of endless searching
Tearing care out of thin air
Your quality
Is fillin me with energy
Knock me out I just don't care

Sexultation
Sweet salvation
Ennervation
Psychronization

Feel the pulse of our union
Will never divide
Melt as one
Drifting further into our love
Deeper we fall
Deeper we fall

Light and life are one
Feel my heat baby
Feel it pulling you
Light and life are one
Feel my heat baby
Feel it push us through

Pushin On

They always look at me like I'm crazy
They always look at me like I'm crazy
Got to be crazy
To dream what I dream
Got to be crazy
Dream what I dream

Chorus:
Gonna keep pushin on
No matter what you do
Gonna keep treadin on
Because the music is the truth
(No you cannot stop me)
Pushin on
No matter what you do
I'm gonna keep treadin on
Because the music is the truth

I wanna bring one person closer to the other
Make you smile
I wanna bring one person closer to the other
Pass the time a little while

Chorus

Through the valley of darkness
I will cherish the light
And I pray every day Lord
For the strength to do what is right

And when I go down
I only want to go down shootin flames of love
And when I go down
Only want to go down shootin flames of love from my guitar

When you focus on the positive side
You may find what you need to get by
Let God deal with your strugglin and strife
Always remember the value of life
And keep pushin

They always look at me like I'm crazy
They always look at me like I'm crazy
Got to be crazy
To dream what I dream
Got to be crazy
Dream what I dream

Chorus

No you cannot stop me
No you cannot stop me
